Club History

Aldingbourne Bowls Club digging the Foundations
Everyone lends a hand on the foundations

Apart from the surface of the green which was laid by Greengauge, the whole site was built by the members using the various skills of our builders, carpenters, electricians, plumbers and decorators. Construction started in the autumn of 1992 and was ready for bowling by May 1993. Although the green was ready to bowl on in May the clubhouse was not finished until July, when Richard Corsie came to officialy open the club. One or two matches were played in June with the players having their tea in the clubhouse, with bare floorboards and three walls, the other end was not finished and was open to the elements, but no one complained.

The Clubhouse

The clubhouse was bought from a club in Surrey who were moving to a new ground and needed to sell it. Between ten and fifteen members of the club spent three weekends in Surrey dismantling and numbering all the sections of the building. It was transported back to Aldingbourne by one of the members who ran his own transport business. It was then reassembled and six feet added to the width and an extra twenty foot section in the middle. After seven or eight years four extra rooms were added to the back of the building which is how the building stands today.

Past Events

In 2008 the ladies of the club won the West Sussex County Double Rinks Competition, then went on to play at Haywards Heath against East Sussex which was a great achievement. This was followed up in 2008 by again getting into the final of the West Sussex Double Rinks Compettition but unfortunately lost to Field Place Ladies.
